The series is based on the famous and important novel 'War and Peace,' written by Leo Tolstoy a long time ago, between 1865 and 1869. 

It tells a big story that connects the lives of wealthy Russian families during a significant war called the Napoleonic Wars. 

The book talks about war, love, how people behave, and what's important in life. 

Tolstoy shows how terrible and confusing war can be, but he also talks about how people always want peace and a good life, even when things are really hard because of fighting.
